University of Findlay breaks ground for rare research enclosure

Once up and running, the new lab will be one of only six of its kind operating in the world.

FINDLAY, Ohio — The University of Findlay broke ground on a new research laboratory, and it will be one of only a handful of its kind on the entire planet.

University of Findlay leaders were on-site at UF's All Hazards Training Center to break ground for their latest addition.

The future Temporary Outdoor Enclosure lab will be fitted to allow students in the university's Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability programs to study air pollutants, and their findings will be shared with ENSCO, an engineering company that works with the U.S. Airforce.

Once it is up and running it will be only the sixth such lab in the world.

"This is the kind of thing that usually only really happens at those Tier 1 research universities, like Ohio State, UNC, that kind of place. So, being able to provide that for our students is really amazing," Assistant Professor of Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health Management Seth Ebersviller said.

EHSS alumn Molly Hammersmith, who is currently working with Ohio Health, was a special guest at the event on Monday. She said the additional hands-on lessons learned inside of this new lab should guarantee better job offers for UF graduates.

"Getting research experience can definitely make you more of a desirable job candidate. So, that's another great addition to our curriculum body," Hammersmith said.

Construction is slated to be completed sometime in the Spring of 2021, with the new lab being able to host research in the summer.
