Math Moves opens at Toledo's Imagination Station

The new exhibit opened on Saturday and adds up to a ton of fun for kids of all ages. The exhibition is open until the end of the year.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A new family event launched over the weekend at Imagination Station and its adding up to be a lot of fun for all ages.

It's called Math Moves and it challenges kids to use their minds, bodies and imaginations in new ways as they explore the M in STEM!

Kids of all ages showed up to take part in a variety of hands-on activities that are designed to make experimenting with concepts memorable and fun.

"It's all about ratios and proportions," said Sloan Eberly Mann, education director at Imagination Station. "It totally brings math to life. It allows families to engage and ask really fun questions. And discover and explore answers. It's just a lot of fun."

The temporary exhibition also draws upon the power of teamwork by encouraging partner activity and conversation to advance mathematical understanding.

Highlights of Math Moves include:

  • Partner Motion: Discover how your rate of motion affects a custom digital graph. Walk back and forth slowly then try again quickly. How does the graph change? Grab a partner and see how your motion graphs compare!
  • Shadow Fractions: Experiment with the placement of objects to make your own shadow stories or scenes. By moving these objects - growing or reducing the size of its shadow - you can directly experience concepts of ratio and proportion.
  • Comparing Frequencies: Create rhythmic percussive sounds using wheels. The smaller wheels have clickers that sound with each turn. The frequency of the clicks depends on the diameter of the small wheel and where it contacts the larger, turning wheel. This allows you to see and hear the rhythm of proportions and the frequency of clicking.

There's more to explore in the Math Moves exhibit. Stop by during regular science center hours and see for yourself. There is NO extra charge to explore the exhibit. It is free with paid admission or membership to Imagination Station.

"After a year of schooling in front of a screen, this interactive exhibit encourages learning in a hands-on, experiential way that makes it memorable and sparks curiosity. It will reignite a passion for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) in children before the next school year," Mann said.

Math Moves runs through the rest of the year.
