LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Planting season is just around the corner and you can get a head start on sprucing up your garden now.

The Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting orders for its annual tree, shrub and garden sale.

Several hardwoods, flowering shrubs and conifers are available. You can also order seed packets, which include seeds collected from the Oak Openings Region.

All the plants are native to the region, which is important when it comes to protecting habitats and creating a natural environment for wildlife to thrive.

Supporting the sale goes beyond beautifying your garden.

"(Native plants) are used to growing here," Jessica Grisier, communication and outreach coordinator with LSWCD said. "Habitat benefits from having native plants because wildlife uses it for food and shelter, and they also have really deep roots so it helps protects the soil. It keeps the soil on the land rather than blow away when we have large rain events or have heavy wind."

You can order now through March 31 at the Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District website at this link.
