Toledo Public Library creates community garden to give back

Box gardens at each branch of the library are tended to by volunteers. The produce is free for the community to take.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Lucas County Public Library is encouraging all of us to go green and grow our own fruits and vegetables.

So this summer, each branch of the library is getting the ball rolling by planting a box garden.

This is the first year that there has been a garden at the Lagrange branch of the library.

Several community partners were involved in the garden; the library purchased the garden bed, and the plants are from Toledo Grows.

"So it was working together to build that community garden relationship that you see other places in the community," said Hannah Grohowski. "This is an area where many people struggle to find fresh fruits and vegetables, so this is a way to give back to our community."

The goal of the garden is to bring the community together and give back, one plant at a time.

It's food for the community to take, and youth volunteers help tend to the garden.

"What we're hoping is that maybe we teach some of our youth or volunteers about gardening and how easy it can be," Grohowski said. "It doesn't have to be an acre yard garden. Maybe they'll plant their own garden and be self-sufficient."

Other branches of the library also have a box garden, and library officials say they really want it to feel like it belongs to everyone.
