Terry Pearson gets 8 years for beating 16-year-old with baseball bat

The 18-year-old found guilty of beating Marcus Bailey nearly to death learned his sentence on Thursday afternoon.

The 18-year-old found guilty of beating 16-year-old Marcus Bailey with a baseball bat learned his sentence on Thursday afternoon.

Terry Pearson was sentenced to eight years and will be on probation for three years after his release.

Pearson was sentenced at the Lucas County Courthouse. He was found guilty for nearly beating Marcus Bailey to death with a baseball bat last December.

The attack left Bailey hospitalized and with permanent brain damage. Before Pearson was sentenced, the victim's mother described to the judge in tears how her son will never be the same again.

"I thank God everyday that I still have my son and he's made it, but I've lost so much. My whole family has lost so much and we grieve for him," cried Michelle Bailey.

Pearson appeared emotionless and told the judge he had been under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack. Before sentencing Pearson apologized to the victim's mother.

"I'm sorry to the mom and what she's going through. It was just a lot going on that day," said Pearson.

Just before sentencing Pearson to eight years in prison, the judge called the incident a senseless tragedy.

"I'm going to sentence you to eight years in prison because of the pain and damage you have done to the community," stated Judge McNamara.

After entering an Alford plea on May 3, Pearson was immediately found guilty of the assault.

An Alford plea is when a defendant maintains their innocence, but admits the evidence against them would result in a guilty verdict if brought to trial.

Bailey continues to recover from the severe brain injuries he suffered in the assault.
