Huron city officials close Nickel Plate Beach after second swimmer goes missing

Crews are searching for 29-year-old Brittany Young of Vermilion, who has been missing since Sunday

HURON, Ohio — After a second swimmer has gone missing in less than a month, the city of Huron has confirmed to WKYC that it has closed Nickel Plate Beach until further notice.

Crews are currently engaged in a search for 29-year-old Brittany Young of Vermilion. The U.S. Coast Guard says Young was swimming with family on Sunday afternoon, when she went under and did not surface.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Huron Fire and Police are all assisting the Coast Guard with the search.

On July 9, the body of 18-year-old Alvin Martin of Ashland was found near the beach. Two days earlier, Martin was riding a raft with a group of men assisting others struggling in the water. Before making it back to shore, Martin went underwater and did not resurface. Six others were rescued.
