TOLEDO (WTOL) - Christmas joy is being spread for folks all over our region today and tomorrow by the volunteers associated with our local Salvation Army.
It is a time for giving, especially here in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. The reason for the season was abuzz today at the Local UAW.
The Salvation Army of Greater Toledo is hosting its Christmas Distribution on Tuesday, December 18 and Wednesday, December 19.
Distribution is taking place at the UAW Local 12 Hall, 2300 Ashland Ave. between 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 8 a.m - 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Salvation Army accepted applications in October from families needing assistance and will help more than 2,800 families throughout Northwest Ohio with food and toys.
On Tuesday, they handed out gift cards and toys to parents of over 5,500 children in our area.
Timothy Hampton, a downtown Toledo resident was overjoyed to bring a bright Christmas morning to his five children.
“Coming down, thanking God for the Salvation Army, helping my kids helping my family, and just being thankful," Hampton said.
Tom Duperree is the Area Coordinator for the Salvation Army of Greater Toledo and is thrilled to be able to help so many.
“We’re just grateful to the community for their continuous support of the Salvation Army’s work throughout Northwest Ohio. I would say that it’s never too late to drop a gift in the kettle, or to drop something in the mail. This is what we’re doing at Christmas, but our work goes on all throughout the year,” he said.
Recipients signed in and received gift cards to Kroger, and were then taken around the room by volunteers to help them pick age appropriate gifts that their children could enjoy.
"These applications for assistance were taken back in October, and so at the point that we registered them for assistance, we also gave them a time to come back on this day or tomorrow, and they're coming in so that we stagger it that we're not overwhelmed with a crowd,” said Duperree.
This is the Salvation Army’s eighth year needing a space as large as the hall at the UAW to help spread joy this time of year. The Salvation Army has been a staple in Toledo since the late 1800s.
If you missed the application window and are still looking for help, you can call the Salvation Army Thursday morning starting at 10 a.m. to see if they can fit you in for an appointment.
If there are enough gifts left—they are happy to hand them out and make sure all in need in our area have a very merry Christmas.
