Rossford Police chief stepping down

"It's the right thing to do at the right time and yes the decision was directly related to my son working here," said Rossford Police Chief Glenn Goss.

ROSSFORD, OH (WTOL) - Just one more day, that's all that's left for Glenn Goss Senior as Rossford's Police Chief.

For more than 6,200 days the Rossford Police Station has been where Chief Goss reported to work. He's parked his car in the chief spot for about 2,370 days, but as of tomorrow he'll leave that spot behind.

A lot has changed in Rossford this summer. They have fresh paved roads, new businesses even construction at their schools, but a shocking change is who will be the new chief of police as Glenn Goss Sr. steps down from his position.

"It's the right thing to do at the right time and yes the decision was directly related to my son working here," said Rossford Police Chief Glenn Goss.

Glenn Goss Jr., the chief's oldest son, was hired by Rossford PD in June of 2016. His dad calls him a true junior following in his dad's footsteps. Both served in the army and then began their career in law enforcement.

"It's in his heart," said Chief Goss. "He wants to serve the community. He wants to be a police officer and I just want to do what's best for him. I think that if I remain as chief I think it would put up some roadblocks for him."

Goss said he made this decision on his own and looks back on his six-and-a-half years as chief with pride knowing the department is better today.

Under his leadership the department grew 60 percent, got an indoor firing range, new cars and equipment. Chief Goss isn't hanging his hat up just yet, he wants to continue serving the community.

"I'm excited actually about it, I want to get out in a car and I want to just say hi to people you know," joked Chief Goss. "I've been locked up in this room for 6 and a half years, not literally, but I've enjoyed it and it's been great but It's probably time."

Senior Sgt. Mark Marek will take over as interim chief until the mayor makes his appointment.

Goss said this job has changed his life and he owes it all to his city, staff and residents.

"Without them we cannot do our job," explained Chief Glenn Goss. "I know a lot of people said thank you for your service and they congratulated me with my career and I'm stepping down, but I want to say that back to the citizens. They've taken good care of me and the Rossford Police Department as well."

Glenn Goss Sr's last day is Friday, but he has high hopes for this department and what it achieves in the future.

He is proud of those he worked alongside of and the city he served for more than 17 years.
