ROSSFORD, OH (Toledo News Now) – Rossford investigators have raided a local gas station accused of selling illegal substances, and they say it is the largest so far.
Police say they confiscated several packages of synthetic marijuana at the Sunoco on Buck Road over the weekend after overhearing teenagers discuss the dangerous drug- known as K2, Spice and Potpourri- that contains chemicals that can cause brain damage.
"You think of potpourri, you think of making your house smell good, but they market them in a way where it encourages people to burn them or inhale them, and then you get a high or a euphoric type of sensation." said Rossford Police Chief Glenn Goss.
Investigators say if they had come across the same situation one year ago, they would not have been able to do anything, because of a former loophole that allowed use of the drug. In October 2011, the state of Ohio passed a new law closing the loophole. Now, trafficking the substance is a felony.
The Wood County Prosecutor's Office says allowing police to get rid of the drug will make the area a safer place.
"There's no standardization, and there's no research on what the either immediate or long-term effects are on the human body, because it was never ingested in that manner." explained Wood County Prosecutor Paul Dobson.
Police say there were many hands in the drug operation, but they're not filing charges until they figure out the source.
