SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) - A woman has turned herself in after hitting a pedestrian in Swanton Wednesday night. On Friday, the victim succumbed to injuries.
Ohio State Highway Patrol says Haylee Michelle Brandt, 30, was walking her dog northbound along state Route 64 near Brookside Drive, when she was hit by a car driven by Rebecca Sue Yarberry, 20. The OSHP says Yarberry told them she was on the clock delivering pizzas, when she swerved because she saw a dog in the road. Yarberry thought she had hit a mailbox, but on her drive back, realized it was not a mailbox and later turned herself in.
Brandt was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The OSHP says Yarberry is cooperating with authorities and has been released.
Those who live near the accident scene say they think the road needs sidewalks or a lower speed limit.
"It's frequented by runners, joggers, little kids on bikes. High schoolers use it to get down the street to the school," said Swanton resident Kari Crosby. "It transitions from 35 to 55, and by the time people hit our street, they're still going 55."
An investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement has not determined if speed was a factor yet.
There is no word on possible charges at this time, but the case could be presented to a grand jury.
