TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A big announcement for the Miller Boat Line on Catawba Island as they will be adding a brand new ferry to their fleet.
For the first time in 20 years, Miller Boat Line will be adding a new ferry. This newly announced fifth boat will be their largest, at 140 long and 38 feet wide.
The boat is being built at the Fraiser Shipyards in Superior, Wisconsin and will make the three-day voyage across the Great Lakes when complete.
The second deck is much larger than current Miller Ferries, and will offer climate control. While the bottom deck will feature an ADA bathroom.
The ferry will be able to carry 26 cars or 600 passengers, or a combination of the two back and forth from the mainland to South and Middle Bass Islands.
Billy Market, president of Miller Boat Line said the new boat will be named the Mary Ann Market after his mother.
It is an upgrade the boat line has need to make to keep up with the increasing demand for ferry services.
"The island has grown, there are more people on the island. And with it consumption goes up. So the number of route trucks, not just the regular traffic, but the number of delivery trucks and route trucks has grown exponentially too. So there is a much bigger demand, of course, during our peak 14 weeks, and that is really when you need the additional vessel," said Market.
The M/V Mary Ann Market is expected to arrive here at the Miller Ferry docks sometime late next September, and be fully operational for the 2020 tourism season.
