Summit County reports first death due to COVID-19

The victim was a resident in their 70s who recently tested positive for COVID-19. They acquired COVID-19 through an unknown source.

AKRON, Ohio — Summit County Public Health has reported the county's first death due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

In a statement released on Thursday, officials say the death occurred on March 25. The victim was a resident in their 70s who recently tested positive for COVID-19. They acquired COVID-19 through an unknown source.

“My heart is with the family, friends and neighbors who are grieving,” said Donna Skoda Health Commissioner. “This loss is deeply felt by all of Summit County. Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by this pandemic.”

On Wedneday, the Ohio Department of Health reported that there were 704 confirmed cases in the state, with ten deaths. 

The U.S. death toll from coronavirus passed 1,000 Wednesday night, according to Johns Hopkins University. Approximately 25% of those are in New York City

The number of worldwide coronavirus cases is nearing 500,000.
