OSHP selects first African-American superintendent to run the agency

One-on-one with Colonel Richard S. Fambro as he discusses the agency's challenges and his vision for the future

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has a new leader.

Colonel Richard S. Fambro has been with OSHP since 1989 and has called Ohio home his entire life.

With 30 years in law enforcement Fambro will lead the agency's criminal investigations and public affairs. He's also the first African-American to be at the head of OSHP.

Fambro said one of his priorities is increasing diversity.

"How can we diversity ourselves as an agency but more importantly saving lives," said Fambro.

Growing up in the inner city prepared the colonel for a career in law enforcement.

"For a young kid from the inner city, it's a dream that I can't say comes true. It's a dream I never had. It's become an opportunity that has provided for me and my family," he added.

Another challenge OSHP faces is retaining troopers that work to clean up criminal activity on Ohio's roadways. But Fambro remains confident in his agency.

"We have to look past those things and figure out ways around them so we can better serve the people that trust us to do the things we're being paid to do."
