New library means more to Toledo neighborhood than just a place to checkout books and DVDs

Mott Library in central Toledo celebrated its grand opening Friday night.

TOLEDO, Ohio — They celebrated Friday night the opening of the new Mott Library in central Toledo.

The $9 million library is actually across the street from the old Mott Library.

It's been under construction since spring of 2018.

The library system describes the building as a welcoming space to gather and connect.

The open space design serves as a front porch to the historic Door Street neighborhood.

"It's an inspiring building. It's one of the things we like to do with libraries. We inspire people to books and all sorts of other things and we hope our buildings also inspire the community as well," according to Toledo Lucas County Public Library Acting Director Jason Kucsma.

Inspiration community leaders hope will come in the form of economic development and revitalization of buildings in central Toledo.

"This structure here is a monument, is amazing. It brings inspiration, motivation and empowerment to the community," said Toledo City Councilman Tyrone Riley.

The 19,000 square foot building is roughly double the size of the old structure.

You'll find quiet spaces for adults and interactive spaces for kids.

Those spaces, when needed, can be expanded for the book collection and other media here.

"This library is a dream come true. Something needed so long, something new and exciting," said Audreia Allen.

"It is new and innovative," added Jacqueline Dewberry.

And possibly a stimulus to revive a once thriving neighborhood.
