East Toledoan plans to move away after celebratory gunfire on New Year's Eve

Heladio Contreras said he's heard the gunfire every New Year's Eve since his family moved in five years ago. He's had enough and plans to put his home up for sale.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A TikTok video of gunfire in east Toledo on New Year's Eve has gone viral with over 500,000 views.

The Toledoan who posted the video, Heladio Contreras, said it happens every year, but this year was the worst. In the video, the shots go off for nearly a minute.

Contreras said his family bought their east Toledo home five years ago. He's frustrated that people shoot their guns in the air on New Year's Eve, especially when fireworks are going off not far away from them.

"I decided why not make a Tik Tok out of it," he said. "Sure enough, it happened, all kinds of guns going off everywhere."

He said the gunshots weren't coming from his street or even his block. But he could still hear them and now worries for his family's safety.

"It's definitely a safety concern," Contreras said. "Not everyone shoots their guns down in the ground, which is irresponsible to begin with. But what goes up comes down. I was really scared. We just got a new car and new roof so I didn't want to pay that insurance deductible."

Not only that, he doesn't want his son to hear gunshots or get concerned.

WTOL 11 reached out to the Toledo Police Department to see if they were tracking gunfire in the area of Contreras' home, but have not heard back.

Meantime, the Contreras family says they've had enough.

"We love our home, but we are going to put it up for sale and we're going to get out of here," Contreras said.
