Drivers in Ohio paying more for gas as they hit the road this holiday weekend

Some local drivers are saying the new gas tax might affect them hitting the road this holiday.

Although 48.9 million Americans are planning to travel this holiday, a record-breaking number, the new gas tax might affect Ohians to hit the road.

This is the highest volume of travelers for the holiday since 2000. Overall, travel is up 4% across the country, according to AAA.

But in Ohio, some drivers have already felt the impact of the new state's gas tax that went into effect Monday. Drivers are now paying extra 10.5 cents per gallon for regular gas and an additional 19 cents for diesel per gallon.

The gas increase will help pay for deteriorating roads and bridges, according to the state.

Some drivers in Toledo said they may not be traveling as much this holiday weekend with the higher gas tax.

"Aren't our taxes suppose to be going towards the roads anyways? Why tax our gas which is already high enough?" Josh Pickett said.

With the new gas tax in place, Ohioans will now pay in total to the state 38.5 cents per gallon for regular gas and 47 cents a gallon for diesel fuel.
