Downtown businesses adjusting without power

Focaccia's Deli planning to open Tuesday after HCR ManorCare brings in generator

TOLEDO, Ohio — Mulitple buildings in downtown Toledo are still without power after crews working at Adams Street and Superior Street hit a power line on Friday morning.

It's an uncommon sight, an empty Focaccia's Deli during the lunch hour.

However, there's a welcome change from the last few days. The lights and coolers are on.

"HCR went out and they rented a huge generator for the building, so they were up and running this morning and then they finally got us up about 15 minutes ago," Focaccia's owner, Ed Beczynski, said.

Unfortunately, some damage had already been done. Beczynski said he was able to save some of the food in a refrigerated trailer, but a good portion had to get chucked.

"All weekend we were just going through, dumping tons of food, it's sad," he said.

Beczyinski said he understands accidents happen but he wishes he would have known the power wouldn't be restored quickly so that he could have donated it.

Lost product aside, it's also been two lost days of business. He does have insurance, but it comes with a big deductible.

"Friday is a big day of sales for us and today, so no idea yet, but yeah, it's in the thousands, the thousands," Beczynski said.

The good news is staff has been working to get the restaurant ready to open Tuesday morning, thanks to the generator.

Meanwhile, across the street at the Renaissance Hotel, it's pretty much business as usual. This, after some big adjustments were made Friday before a generator got to town.

"It's a little nerve-wracking when your power's coming from a truck in the parking lot but we've been reassured that it's the best equipment out there and we shouldn't have any issues with it," General Manager, Brian Crooks, said.

The Heights and Brim House are also open.
