2-year-old girl dies after being hit by truck in south Toledo on Tuesday

She was hit near a home on the 500 block of Toronto just before 6 p.m.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A young child is dead after being hit near a home on the 500 block of Toronto Tuesday evening.

The incident happened just before 6 p.m.

Police said the man who hit 2-year-old Celina Vasquez, Robert Thebeau, was taking his brother-in-law, James Tye's, new truck out for a test drive near where several kids were playing.

According to police, Thebeau and Tye stopped to visit family on Toronto and to see Tye's new truck.

Authorities said that numerous children and babysitter Jason Robazkiewicz came out to look at the vehicle. After a few minutes, Robazkiewicz ushered the children back to the porch away from the vehicle.

Police said that Thebeau believed all the children were on the porch of the home and began to pull away from the curb.

No one noticed that Vasquez was standing in front of the front bumper.

According to police, the front of the vehicle hit Vasquez, causing her to fall down in the street and the vehicle's tire ran over her.

Police said that bystanders called 911 and began CPR on Vasquez.

The girl was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at around 7:10 p.m.
