Local kids get opportunity to learn from former NFL players

The July heat did not stop dozens of kids from showing up to take part in a football clinic hosted by the Cleveland Browns.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Football is about more than just playing the game, and on Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns and Start High School helped prove it.

Together, they hosted the Legends Youth Football Clinic for boys and girls ages 8 through 14.

Over 70 kids showed up for the event and got hands-on football instruction and learned fundamental drills.

"It was a fun opportunity to play against people," said participant, Mason Amick.

Aside from the football basics, Wednesday was about educating the kids on skills that can be used off the field like teamwork and being someone to look up to.

"One of the things I like telling all the kids is that they're all role models because if there's a young kids younger than what they are, that kid will be looking and them and so on and so on. Everybody is a role model," said former Cleveland Browns Player, Cleo Miller.

Learning to play the sport is one thing, but gaining knowledge from NFL professionals is another.

"I learned how to block even though I'm not getting the ball and how to block other players and block good if they're coming to my side," said Jayse Daniels, another participant.

The importance of hosting the clinic was to help motivate the kid's minds to show them what they can be in the future and for some, the clinic was just beginning of their dreams.

"My dream is to be in the NFL, but not for no particular team, but its just to be in the NFL," said Jayse Daniels.

The clinic was made possible by Toledo Public Schools' Head Start program which was recently awarded $9.7 million to expand on current programs and services.
