Free dental clinic for kids offered at Owens Community College

Kids age six months to 18 years can sign up for a free dentist appointment.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — According to a survey conducted by the American Dental Association, 59% of people do not go to the dentist because of the cost of dental care. Like other forms of health care including physical, mental and vision, it can be difficult to find a provider who takes a specific insurance and costs can be burdensome even after insurance negotiations.

A program at Owens Community College is seeking to alleviate some of that cost by offering families a free dental health day for children. "Kids Access to Dental Care Day" provides free dental services for children ages six months to 18 years old. This includes dental cleanings, x-rays, sealants and fluoride.

Free dental services are particularly beneficial to low-income families. According to the ADA, 47% of low-income individuals have poor to fair dental health. In comparison, 46% of high-income families have "very good" dental health.

Poor dental health can cause other problems such as problems sleeping, difficulty chewing/biting, chronic pain and social problems such as embarrassment or anxiety.

The event will be held on Monday, Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Dental Hygiene Clinic, which is room 207 in the Health Technologies Hall.

Although the appointments are free, limited spots are available. Services must be scheduled ahead of time by calling 567-661-7294.
