COVID-19 outbreak identified at Put-in-Bay

8 people who recently visited the island's bars and restaurants have tested positive for coronavirus.

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio — A coronavirus outbreak has been identified at Put-in-Bay, leaders with the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department said Tuesday.

At this point, eight people (six from Lucas County and two from Ottawa County) who visited the island from June 17-21 have tested positive. Health officials said these individuals visited the Commodore Hotel, The Mist and Mr. Ed's.

Leaders from both Toledo-Lucas County and the Ottawa County Health Department are advising people who were at those bars and restaurants between June 17-21 to watch for symptoms and self-quarantine for 14 days.

People with symptoms, which may develop up to 14 days after exposure, should seek immediate testing for coronavirus.

Those without symptoms are also able to request testing.

Health officials warn that asymptomatic infections do occur and can still be contagious.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell
  •  Fever

"The virus can spread when people are in close proximity to each other and not wearing face coverings," Ottawa County Health Commissioner Nancy Osborn said. "The public must understand the importance of personal responsibility and take the vital steps to protect themselves and others from the unnecessary transmission of COVID-19."

If anyone who visited those businesses during the listed time frame does become symptomatic, they are asked to contact their local health department. For Lucas County, call 419-213-4100. For Ottawa County, call 419-734-6800.
