No need to throw shade in the garden

Go 419 has the best tips from Nature's Corner on how to manage shaded flower beds

TOLEDO, Ohio — Knowing which plants are best for different areas of your yard can be a little overwhelming.

Go 419 Host Malena Caruso got some advice from the experts at Nature’s Corner about which plants are best for shady areas.

Some people are afraid that maybe they don’t get a lot of color to choose from but Jenny Amstutz from Nature's Corner is going to prove that wrong.

"I started with a few boxwood plats on the cart, so we’re good to go with some winter color," said Amstutz.

"It’s not just about hostas. Everyone thinks it just has to be green. Look at all of this beautiful color. These are coral bells. They love morning sun and afternoon shade.

"These are bleeding hearts," Go 419 host Malena Caruso said. "I grew up with these. I have to have one of these. I can remember as a little girl thinking these were the coolest things!"

Jenny grabbed an azalea. "A splash of spring color. They get big. This is going to add movement not everything is going to be one level. We’re going to have color year round."

Jenny said to have fun arranging your flower beds. "Boxwoods are going to be on the end of the bed as the anchor. These get about three-feet wide. So we need to give everything room to grow."

One tip the pros have, bring in photos of your garden and measurements to help lay out the flower bed.

"Now, everything wouldn’t have to be in a straight line. We’re going to come forward. Come back a little bit. Maybe we’ll fill in a little bit of space," Jenny said.

"So, I’m going to pretend this is a walkway to your front door. I’m going to put the bleeding heart right here so it pops up in the spring. When it’s done we can put an annual or something there. That will give you lots of color. I think you’re all set," Jenny said.

If you have a shaded area around your house do not fear. There’s plenty to fill it in. We’ll have so many awesome ideas for you to make your garden oasis this spring and summer just follow Go 419.
