MAUMEE (WTOL) The Daughter Project is a Toledo organization helping victims of sex trafficking.

The goal is to lead children and women on their long journey to recovery.

Friday night there was an awareness event to discuss a topic considered rape for profit.

The youngest girl Daughter Project has helped is 12 years old. Survivors rescued have come from Maumee, Perrysburg and Pemberville. They’ve worked as prostitutes, strippers and in in sex clubs.

“We provide counseling, food and clothing, help them with their education. For the older women we help them with housing, transportation, jobs, everything,” according to Jeff Wilbarger of Daughter Project.

“It’s one of the greatest crimes against humanity” added Sister Sandy Sherman, whose group Rahab’s Heart works with Daughter Project.

Volunteers nightly head out onto the streets to rescue sex trafficking victims. She said all they want is respect.

“They still have needs. They still have the trauma inside. Need someone to say ‘I love you.’ And to walk with them. No judgement.”
