Bike-share program locations announced

At 18 different locations in and around downtown Toledo you will soon be able to take a different kind of transportation.

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - At 18 different locations in and around downtown Toledo you will soon be able to take a different kind of transportation.

There will be 100 different bikes stationed at places from the Amtrak Station to the Great Lakes Museum.

One man from the Detroit area says this makes him more excited about his trips to the Glass City.

"You've got the ballpark, some people might want to take a spin before the game, there is all kind of things to do on them," said Ben Solomon.

Many neighbors who live and work downtown say they are excited, but hope the bikes are affordable.

A price has not yet been determined, but there will be multiple options such as a yearly, monthly, weekly or even daily pass.

This is a pilot program with the City of Toledo and the Metroparks Toledo, but leaders hope it continues to grow.

"We are hoping to almost immediately expand the program into our near downtown neighborhoods, so into the Old West End, into the East Side, into parts of the perhaps Vistula Neighborhood so that people can use the bikes not just for fun in and around the downtown but really as a transportation alternative," said Gretchen DeBacker, the City of Toledo.

Tuesday, Toledo city council is expected to approve $150,000 to Gotcha Bike LLC for the yearly maintenance.

City leaders are hoping to work with corporate sponsors to minimize the cost, just announcing the Toledo Refinery as their first partner.

Right now, samples of the bikes are at Wildwood Metropark.

"Many, many, many cities have these type of programs, these bike-share programs. It just brings another fun thing to do, it's a sense of vitality, it's people moving around in and around the downtown area," said DeBacker.
