DES MOINES, Iowa — Hy-Vee is recalling a bagged garden salad product sold across the Midwest due to concerns that it may be contaminated with Cyclospora.

The product affected is Hy-Vee's 12 oz. Bagged Garden Salad, which is manufactured by Fresh Express. The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that the product has sickened 122 people in seven states and sent 19 to the hospital.

During their investigation, the agencies identified products linked to the outbreak – including Fresh Express’ private label products at retailers across the country that were impacted – including one for Hy-Vee. The recall is limited to 12 oz. Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad, all UPCs and expiration dates.

The FDA website says Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite so small it can only be seen under a microscope. When people eat food or drink water that’s contaminated with Cyclospora, they can get an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis.

"Cyclospora is generally transmitted when infected feces contaminate food or water. It’s unlikely to be transmitted directly from person to person because the Cyclospora parasite needs time (days to weeks) after being passed in a bowel movement to become infectious for another person," reads the website.

Hy-Vee says the product was distributed to stores across its eight-state region of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. No other Hy-Vee food items are impacted by this recall.

The Des Moines-based grocer says it has not received any reports of illness due to consumption of the recalled product. Customers who purchased Bagged Garden Salad should discard it or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.
