Family of five survives devastating fire, in need of help

The family says they have a lot of healing to do physically, emotionally and mentally; but they are feeling overwhelmingly blessed to have each other.

TOLEDO (WTOL) - A family beyond grateful to have their loved ones still after a horrific house fire ripped through their home Thursday on Prouty Avenue.

"It literally took my breath away,” said Clyde Reynolds, David’s dad. “It's a miracle anybody made it out of there."

Two adults and two children fought their way through the flames as fire crews rushed to rescue their seven-year-old daughter.

Most of the Reynolds family remains in the hospital as of Friday night.

The family says they have a lot of healing to do physically, emotionally and mentally; but they are feeling overwhelmingly blessed to have each other.

"There's not enough thanks that I could give anybody and the guys that went in to save my little granddaughter and bring her back to life, it's just, there's no words to thank them."

It’s been only a day since the traumatic fire on Prouty Avenue that almost claimed a family of five.

"There's not enough thanks that I could give anybody and the guys that went in to save my little granddaughter and bring her back to life,” said Theresa Kruse. “There's no words to thank them."

The entire family fought to escape the home. David, the father, saw the flames early Thursday morning and assembled his whole family; two daughters, nine-year-old Audrianna and seven-year-old Maddison got out while his wife, Alexandria passed out near the door, as he worked to save their seven-year-old daughter Addison who ran to escape before being trapped within the burning house.

“He said he was in his bathrobe and he grabbed snow and he put it in his bathrobe and covered his face to go back in after Addison," explained Clyde Reynolds of his son’s heroism.

Firefighters were forced to run through the flames and were able to rescue Addison.

The entire Reynolds family was taken the Mercy Health St. Vincent.

“You can’t say thank you because it’s not a big enough word,” said Debbie Reynolds, David’s mom of the Toledo Fire Department’s actions. “Hero gets thrown around a lot, but that’s it, their heroes.”

Alexandria and Addison are in critical condition while Madison and David are in recovering in the burn unit. Their oldest daughter, Audrianna, was released and is with family. Family, who still can’t believe this happened.

“God is good all the time and all the time God is good,” said Theresa Kruse, Alexandria’s mom. “God helped them, the firefighters are heroes, everybody here at the hospital are heroes. The outpouring of love and support from everybody the whole community, strangers, it’s just, it takes your breath away.”

The Reynolds family did not have insurance and lost everything in the fire that TFD says was accidental. As the family fights for healing, their parents are working to piece together what’s left.

"They had one toy that made it out of the fire it's a plastic fire truck because Addison wants to be a firefighter," said Debbie Reynolds. When firefighters brought that cleaned up toy into the hospital it helped their spirits, but the family needs much, much more to get by.

"I never thought my family would have to be on the receiving side of it,” said Clyde Reynolds. “But what's there means a lot."
