Doctors warn of the tampon recall posing a serious health threat

“If these tampons are left inside, you might notice discharge, irritation, odor and if left unattended for a long time you can get an infection called toxic shock syndrome and that can be a life threatening infection,” said Dr. Denny.

TOLEDO (WTOL) - A popular brand has been recalled because they are unraveling inside women’s bodies.

Kimberly Clark said Kotex Sleek Regular Absorbency tampons have a quality related defect. Multiple women say the tampons are coming apart as they’re pulling them out.

“I’ve never seen a recall on tampons like this, where the tampons have been defective,” said Dr. Brittany Denny, OBGYN at ProMedica.

Reports indicate some women are seeking medical attention because small pieces of the tampons are being left inside their bodies. Doctors, WTOL 11 spoke to, said if this happens and is left untreated, serious problems could happen.

“If these tampons are left inside, you might notice discharge, irritation, odor and if left unattended for a long time you can get an infection called toxic shock syndrome and that can be a life threatening infection,” said Dr. Denny.

Dr. Denny said if you take out a tampon and notice a chunk is missing or feel something uncomfortable, you can try and gently get it out yourself. If you are not comfortable doing that, see your OBGYN or go to an urgent care facility for an examination.

Additionally doctors say you should not leave a tampon in for more than eight hours.
