TOLEDO (WTOL) - Toledo police say he stole from the dead, taking the belongings straight from a casket.
It happened at the Sujkowski funeral home on Airport Highway Wednesday night, March 4.
Police say the burglar got in through the back windows. At this point, they say nothing else was disturbed but the deceased.
An 83-year-old woman died Monday. Her family held her visitation at the funeral home Wednesday. Later that night, family living upstairs heard someone else show up. "They heard a little bit of noise, a little something," said Toledo Police Lt. David Schmidt, "They called the police to check it out. The dog was a little uneasy."
And it wasn't to pay respects.
"Obviously, it's pretty serious when someone breaks into a sanctuary like that and then takes something," Schmidt said.
Police say a burglar took two gold rings and one gold necklace right off the body of the deceased. "I'm sure it was valuable to the family, regardless what the value of the jewelry might have been."
This is a crime the funeral home hasn't seen in at least 40 years.
