LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan's January unemployment rate rose to 11.6%, the highest monthly mark recorded in the state since early 1984.
It's likely Michigan's latest jobless figure released Thursday will be the highest in the nation, as it has been for most of the past three years. But some states have not yet reported their January unemployment rates.
Michigan's revised December unemployment rate was 10.2 percent, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. It originally was reported at 10.6 percent.
Economists have predicted that Michigan's jobless situation will worsen in 2009.
The national unemployment rate for January was 7.6 percent, up from 7.2 percent.
