Officials: Ohio man escapes jail via ceiling vent

CLEVELAND (AP) - Authorities say a Cleveland man escaped from the city's jail by climbing through a vent and then crawling along until the ceiling collapsed.

The acting commissioner of the city's division of corrections, Mary Bounds, says 22-year-old Dontelle Brown came down through the ceiling on the sixth floor of Cleveland's Justice Center at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said Brown then walked down the stairs to the first floor, strolled around a security guard and left the building through the front door.

Bounds says it's unclear if Brown, a grand theft auto suspect, had been handcuffed or was in a cell when he accessed the vent. She says there's no indication Brown was helped in the escape.
