A proposal to start up a new low-fare airline offering high-paying jobs flew into Toledo this week. While I am all for growing local businesses, this idea needs to make a couple more trips thorough the security scanner.
The group behind the start-up airline, Jet America, is dangling 950 jobs, each paying around $50,000. That sounds great, but the price tag is $3 million in local investments and incentives to get the planes in the air.
Have these people been flying on Cloud Nine?
The turbulent airline industry is littered with bankruptcies and failures. I checked with Boeing and they claim only 1 percent of all startup airlines actually make it.
While I would love to be able to pack my bags and grab a new flight out of Toledo Express, this is one project the Regional Growth Partnership needs to keep grounded.
