PERRYSBURG, OH (WTOL) - The merchants of downtown Perrysburg had a green idea this holiday season. Main Street was lined with potted Christmas trees, instead of cut trees.

"It actually shows community involvement, community spirit. It says we want to have something that is green, that is environmentally friendly," says Christine Best of Perrysburg Main Street Inc.

With the holidays long done with, the potted Christmas trees, including Snoopy, will have to find a new permanent home.

"These trees will have a new life in Rotary Community Park this year," says Best.

The future park, which is slated to begin construction this spring, is already home to last years crop of Christmas trees. This week, nearly a dozen and a half new trees that lit up downtown Perrysburg will arrive.

"It is used for Christmas decorations and is used to supplement our planning here at Rotary Community Park. So it is the true three R's and then you add the recycling, that we are recycling the trees curbside which will become mulch," says Judy Hagen of the City of Perrysburg.

Trees that are cut down were collected this past week, but they will be recycled as well.

"We now have a city compost site where all those chipped trees can be taken. They are double ground later this year into a nice wood mulch that can be used for landscaping purposes," says Hagen.

If your Christmas tree is still in your yard, this could be a great start to a compost pile or a good habitat for birds.

Turning a tree filled holiday spirit, into something green, gives cause to really celebrate.
