Mall attacks reveal crime is up at Westfield

WEST TOLEDO (WTOL) - It's getting more dangerous to shop at Toledo's most popular mall. News 11 dug through police reports and found crime reports are up about 20% this month over the same time last year.

On Saturday night, December 20, Sarah Nitkiewicz and a friend were waiting for AAA after locking their keys in the car.

They say two women pulled up in an SUV, got out and began attacking them. The victims say the attackers demanded their purses and presents. Nitkiewicz tells News 11, "When I saw the one coming out after me, I thought, once again, it was a dream. I thought I was going to die. I was like 'I need to try to run as fast as a I can. She grabbed me, and as she's beating me, I was thinking 'Hold on and scream as loud as you can'. Try to get help."

Nitkiewicz says she was hit several times with some type of metal objects. She surrendered her purse and gifts she had just purchased.

Her warning to other shoppers: Be aware of your surroundings and travel in groups.

Mall security

A Westfield spokesperson told us Tuesday that the mall's security plan includes uniform and plain clothes officers that are both in vehicles and on foot. They also have digital surveillance.
