BEDFORD (WTOL)  - Kids at Bedford Public Schools were back in class after a snow day. The district closed Wednesday when Monroe County road crews couldn't clear neighborhood streets.

The county cut-backs are having a ripple effect that affects seniors as well.

Each week, Pat Romanowicz relies on Meals On Wheels to deliver hot meals to her doorstep. She uses a wheelchair to get around, and she's unable to cook for herself.

On a snowy Wednesday, when food deliveries never came for her and other Bedford area seniors, Pat says, "I ate a sandwich and some other junk out of a box."

Volunteer Leroy Bunge says the food was available, but they weren't allowed to drive on the slick roads. "When Bedford school closes for snow weather, then the senior center closes. So we weren't out yesterday," Leroy says.

"To have this small amount of snow be so crippling in this area that I'm from, I'm just not used to that. It seems ridiculous," Romanowicz tells News 11.

Cutbacks at the Monroe County Road Commission have schools prepared to take more snow days. So volunteers are preparing seniors for a tough winter. "Through the winter, they've got a large bag with a lot of different canned goods in them to take care of the days that doesn't permit us to go out and deliver meals," Leroy says.

With heavy snow in the forecast, Romanowicz worries she'll miss another hot meal, and her appointment with a visiting nurse. "If the roads are bad enough, she comes from Adrian, and that's an awful long drive to come over here if the roads aren't even touched."

That leaves her home alone until the weather breaks.
