WEST TOLEDO (WTOL) - Police say the same group of armed robbers are hitting businesses in west Toledo. When they get what they want, they're injuring their victims anyway.
Police say they do see criminals using mace in some cases, but not this often. They have released the surveillance video from a robbery last week. It shows it was a female clerk who was sprayed.
In the surveillance video at the In and Out Mart last Monday, police think they're three teenagers who forced one clerk to the floor and the other to open the register. It shows they take the money and cigarettes, but didn't just leave. Instead they maced the girl behind the counter and then ran.
Dennis Futrel works near Korner Carryout. He says, "It don't make any sense. When you get what you want, why hurt somebody afterwards?"
But police say it's not the first time these three have struck.
Just five days earlier, police say the same suspects hit the Korner Carryout on West Sylvania just nine blocks away.
Debbie Potrzebowski helped the clerk who was maced and stumbled his way in to her bar. "We were trying to help him rinse it out before the ambulance came. We were gagging and coughing."
Futrel fears the macers live in the area. "It's right in this neighborhood where they're targeting," he says.
If they're not caught, he worries who else could be hit by their mean spirits. "They got the money. It was obvious what they wanted. And then, they turn around and mace somebody. They're doing it out of spite apparently."
