Mayor Finkbeiner to propose five cent fee for grocery bags

Posted by LS

TOLEDO (WTOL) - Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner wants to lessen the number of plastic bags that go into the landfill.

He's expected to present city council with an ordinance to establish a 'green' fee for disposable shopping bags.

According to our media partner the Toledo Blade, shoppers would be charged 5 cents for every plastic bag they take home from a store.

Seattle, San Francisco, and New York already have similar green taxes.

The Blade reports:

"It was something along the line of six cents - one penny going to the store and five cents going to the city," Council president Sobczak said. Read the full Blade report-- Budget Crisis: Finkbeiner eyes 5-cent tax on each plastic store bag in Toledo.
