Wildfire destroys 70 homes in southern California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - An official in Santa Barbara County, Calif., says a brush fire has destroyed about 70 homes in the upscale community of Montecito.

Terri Nisich, a spokeswoman with the Santa Barbara County executive office, says the fire started around 6 p.m. Thursday and quickly spread to about 800 acres shortly before midnight. County officials say four people have been injured - two from burns and two from smoke inhalation. The severity of the injuries was not immediately clear.

The fire is being fanned by fierce winds and is pushing west toward the city of Santa Barbara. A fire official there says he spotted about 20 homes burning within city limits. Nisich says fire crews from neighboring counties are pouring into the area to help battle the fire.
