Iraq war journalist to speak at UT

From a news release:

Dahr Jamail, journalist of the Iraq War, will be at The University of Toledo Thursday, Oct. 30, inStudent Union Room 2574 on Main Campus from 7 to 9 p.m. to present "Resisting Empire."

He will discuss his experiences as an independent journalist/war reporter.

After spending time in Alaska working as a mountain guide and writing about climbing for a local newspaper, Jamail became frustrated in 2003 with the American media and its view of the war and the Bush administration. He decided to see for himself what the war in Iraq was really all about.

As an independent journalist, Jamail spent eight months in Iraq between November 2003 and February 2005, reporting stories not covered by the American media on his blog. All of his dispatches and news stories can be read at

Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches From an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq was written by Jamail as a collection of dispatches from some of the most dangerous places in Iraq.

His news stories and dispatches from the war zone have been translated in more than 10 languages, and he has appeared on NPR and the BBC. He now is writing for the Inter Press Service, Le Monde Diplomatique and other media outlets.

Jamail's visit is sponsored by the UT chapter of the International Socialist Organization.
