From a news release:
Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak will announce today with local seniors and representatives from the Area Office on Aging, the University of Toledo, and the YMCA of Greater Toledo a number of alternative exercise locations for senior citizens.
For many area residents, particularly senior citizens, the Southwyck mall was an ideal walking location due to its size, ample parking, comfortable temperature, location, and convenience. Many of these citizens have contacted Commissioner Wozniak and asked for her assistance in finding indoor walking locations, especially as the weather turns colder.
"The health and wellness of our citizens has a profound impact on our community," said Commissioner Wozniak. "It's important that area residents have safe, affordable, and convenient facilities to stay healthy."
Working with the University of Toledo, the YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo, the Area Office on Aging, and Toledo City Councilman D. Michael Collins, Commissioner Wozniak was able to identify several free locations for seniors to walk. Among the free locations are the Lucas County Recreation Center, the YMCA/UT Morse Center, the Southwyck Rd.
K-Mart, and the Westfield-Franklin Park Mall. In addition to the free locations, the Wolf Creek YMCA location will be open for walkers for $1 per use.
"The YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo is proud to be part of this unique and innovative partnership. We look forward to the opportunity to serve more of the senior population in our community through this program"
said, Todd Tibbits, Sr. Vice President of Operations/COO, YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo.
Seniors will be able to pick up a guide (attached) that outlines the hours and locations of the walking facilities in our community. The guides are available at any of the walking locations as well as the Area office on Aging and several local senior centers.
