WTOL phone panel to take calls on breast cancer

(WTOL) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- the perfect time to take advantage of a service being offered by WTOL News 11.

We'll have a phone panel at News 11 offices to take calls Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. from people who need or want information about breast cancer prevention, symptoms and/or treatment.

Also, women may call to see if they are eligible for a free mammogram. To be eligible for a free mammogram:

A woman must be 40 years or older, have no insurance, and meet the income guidelines. If a woman is eligible, she would talk to her case manager, who would connect her with a provider in her county and schedule her appointment for her services.  The counties served are: Fulton, Henry, Defiance, Williams, Lucas, Paulding, Erie, Sandusky, Ottawa and Wood. Women who should call in are those who have never had their screenings, women who need to get screenings, or women who have a concern.

The Breast and Cervical Cancer Project of Fulton County, which received a $100,000 grant from the Komen Foundation, will participate in the phone panel as will some people from the Komen Foundation.

"Last year, we were able to help over 1,300 women get access to free mammogram services and other annual screenings," said Jaime Fogarty, a social worker with the Fulton County Health Department. "This year we would like to strive to get our numbers even higher."

If you'd like to call the panel this evening, please do so at 419-255-2255. And please use your redial button if you get a busy signal. Again, the panel will take calls from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday evening.
