Ohioans may register and vote on same day, federal court rules

OHIO (WTOL) - A federal court has ruled Ohioans can register and vote on the same day.

Early voting begins Tuesday, and any Ohio voter can request an absentee ballot without stating a reason. The hope is that that will cut down on long lines on Nov. 4.

There's also a one-week window, between Tuesday and Oct. 6 where people can register to vote and cast their ballot at the same time. That issue is also before the Ohio Supreme Court.

"We open at 8:30 tomorrow morning and we'll be ready to accept people coming in, registering and voting absentee at the early voting center on Jefferson and 22nd St.," said Jeremy Demegall, Lucas County Board of Elections deputy director.

It's also possible that a lawsuit will be filed to challenge an advisory from the Ohio Secretary of State's office to ban election observers at early polling locations.
