Driver identified in fatal Ottawa County crash

OTTAWA COUNTY (WTOL) - SR-2 at SR-19 in Ottawa County is open again after being closed most of the day because of a fatal accident that happened around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

One person was killed in the accident.

A press release by Ohio State Highway Patrol:

Carroll Township- The Sandusky Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal crash involving two commercial vehicles.  The crash occurred on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at 0902 hours on State Route  2 approximately 3 tenths of  mile east of  State Route 19, in Carroll Township, Ottawa County.

Driver #1- William L Skeels Jr. age 25 of 1115 Craig Rd Maumee, OH 43537. Mr. Skeels was transported by Carroll Township EMS to St. Charles Hospital in Oregon, Ohio. Mr. Skeels was treated and released that same day with minor injuries.

Vehicle #1- 2004 Freightliner FL70 box truck. Owner Perfection Bakeries Inc. of  5085 W. Grand River Lansing, MI 48906

Driver #2- Patrick F Ardito age 55 of 30514 Euclid Ave. Wickliff, OH 44092. Mr. Ardito sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vehicle #2-Power unit 1998 Kenworth conventional tractor. Owner Ohio Bulk Transfer of 3203 Haward Ave. Cleveland, Ohio.

Trailer information 1998 East Quad  dump trailer. Owner same as above.

Load Information: Soil and stone.

Unit #1 was stopped on SR 2 westbound due to construction. Driver unit #2 failed to stop striking unit #1 in the rear and immediately caught fire. Unit #1 then traveled off the south side of  SR 2 coming to rest in the ditch.
