US calls emergency NATO meeting to discuss Russia

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is on her way to Europe this morning for a special meeting among NATO allies.

The U.S. called the meeting to review the alliance's relationship with Russia in the aftermath of its assault on Georgia.

NATO is expected to consider a range of upcoming activities planned with Russia, from military exercises to ministerial meetings, and decide case by case whether to go ahead with each one.

Officials will also discuss support for a planned international monitoring mission in the region, as well as a package of support to help Georgia rebuild damaged infrastructure.
