Assignment Education: Cleveland Schools struggling with violence

Assignment Education

With schools about to reopen and a year after a student opened fire in a school building there, the Cleveland School District is armed with a new report.

The report says as the district stuggles to identify potentially violent youths, it questions the effectiveness of discipline policies and the professionalism of security officers.

Still, some in the district, like the Teachers Union president, are skeptical the report will change much of anything. But others, say it already is changing things.

"We've been working with our union on developing the professional development for this school year around what we knew was coming out of this study, so action is already occuring," said Eric Gordon, chief academic officer, Cleveland Schools.

The Cleveland District got higher marks for interacting with community agencies.
