The Toledo Lucas County Port Authority needs a new director. Bill Carroll, the chairman of the Lucas County Port Authority Board, will head the search committee.

Mr. Carroll is a man of great integrity and personal strength. He's going to need it.

The committee includes four people from the port, and one person each from the county and the city.

The national search should take 3 to 6 months. In that time I am certain Mr. Carroll will receive plenty of advice and pressure from outside sources.

I'm betting he's strong enough to tell the mayor and others to butt out. He assures me the search will be thorough and honest. I believe him.

The port authority's role in regional economic development is crucial, yet it seems to me that it is often underestimated and misunderstood.

The new director is going to have to move quickly if the inter modal project is going to happen.

This is a critical moment in defining our region's future.

We all need to support Mr. Carroll and to let this committee go to work without unnecessary interference.
