From a news release:

Statement by William J. Carroll

Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority chairman

Earlier this month, The Port Authority Board of Directors was made aware of allegations of misconduct by the Port Authority President Jim Hartung. The Port Authority Board immediately embarked upon an investigation and retained the law firm of Spengler Nathanson to conduct an independent investigation into these allegations.

Today, the Board of Directors met in executive session and discussed the results of the investigation.

The Board of Directors has decided that it is in the best interest of the community and the Port Authority to dismiss Jim Hartung effective today. The board will immediately assemble a committee of community leaders to embark upon a national search for a new president.

The Port Authority Board takes seriously its role as a public agency and dedicates itself to act properly and ethically. This has been an exhaustive independent investigation that has included interviews with over two-dozen individuals and the review of thousands of documents. The decision of the board is a result solely of the facts discovered in this investigation.

This has been a difficult process for everyone involved. This investigation has taken place in an expeditious manner, as it is vital that we get back to the critically important work that the Port Authority does. I want to thank the Board of Directors and the staff for their diligence and cooperation in this matter.
