WEST TOLEDO (WTOL) - A Toledo woman says a burglar left her helpless Tuesday night when she had no chance to call for help.

They hit around 1 a.m. in the 4300 block of Commonwealth in west Toledo.

"They were able to pry through that deadbolt," the victim tells us. This is how this 61-year-old woman says thieves broke into her house.

"I lived here for 30 years and never worried. I never even used to lock my door during the day," she tells us.

She says the burglar(s) first broke her front door,  then went to the back. Once inside, they took her purse and her keys, but didn't expect what they would take next. "Obviously, they didn't want me to be able to call out. And, if I woke up, what was going to happen. That's the scary part," she tells us.

The thieves didn't take much inside, but did take her two house phones before they left in her car. "It was terrifying. Where are you going to go when you don't have a phone, and you don't have a car?"

Since she couldn't call 911, the victim went to a neighbor's. "I was banging so hard that they ended up calling the police, thinking someone was breaking into their house."

Police were able to find her car, but she still doesn't feel safe. "I don't think they have any idea what they're doing to someone's life," she says.

She now keeps her phone receiver down with a knife and is setting up an alarm system. One last change in her routine is sleeping with a cell phone. She said that could be her last hope while the criminals are still on the loose. "Are they going to come back? You don't know."
