(AP) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain is taking a day off from the campaign trail after a week spent sharpening his criticism of Democratic rival, Barack Obama.
McCain's latest criticism involves Obama's cancelation of a visit to wounded troops in Germany during his overseas. McCain's campaign says Obama chose world leaders and speeches over "injured American heroes." It repeats the attack in a new campaign aid this weekend.
Obama's campaign calls the accusation "wildly inappropriate," saying the Pentagon had raised political concerns about a visit to a military hospital.
Obama returned to Chicago last night from the 9-day trip, which took him to U.S. war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan and then to the Middle East and Europe. He rejects Republican criticism of the trip, saying he thinks it helped build ties with allies in tough times.
Not taking a breather, the Democrat plans more campaigning today, addressing the Chicago convention of UNITY: Journalists of Color.
