OTTAWA COUNTY - Brush Wellman has broken ground on its new expansion, reports News 11's Dick Berry.

About 600 jobs currently exist at the Brush Wellman facility in Elmore. The expansion will create 25 more positions and retain 118 positions that might have been lost had the expansion not been approved.

Eighty percent of the cost of the expansion will come from a Federal grant. The rest will be picked up by Brush Wellman. The primary client will be the Defense Department

Over the years, the plant has been at the center of a health controversy. However, Brush Wellman President Richard Hipple says the company has taken great strides in following environmental policies.

"The new plant... is going to be designed with a much higher level of environmental standards. We're far below any kind of environmental criteria that we have. We're quite sure it's a very, safe plant," says Hipple.

It is expected the expansion will be finished by 2011.
