TOLEDO (WTOL) - A 46-year-old father has been arrested and charged with trying to kill himself and his 4-year-old daughter.
Police tell us Thomas Bragg, Jr. was found at 4 a.m. Wednesday in his SUV at Telegraph and Old State Line Rd.
We're told he had run a tube from the exhaust pipe into the rear passenger window while he and his daughter were inside.
When police came across the vehicle, they pulled the girl out and rushed her to the hospital. She's expected to be fine.
Bragg is facing charges of attempted murder and felonious assault.
Interview with mother Trista Bragg
News 11's Lisa Rantala spoke with Bragg's estranged wife Trista Bragg. "A million and one thoughts just crossed my mind in one second," she said.
It was an early morning phone call that let Trista know her four-year-old daughter was in trouble. "I'm just appalled. I'm heartbroken that he would even think to hurt his baby."
Trista is separated from her husband, but didn't keep him from his child. So she didn't fear, at first, when he picked their daughter up Tuesday night. "His thoughts and plans were to take what means more to me, one of my kids," she tells News 11.
According to police, Bragg told his daughter they were going camping. But they ended up in a vacant lot instead.
Detective Ray Carroll says, "This was a definite, deliberate attempt to take both of their lives." Police say he attached a hose from his exhaust pipe to his passenger side window. He also put duct tape over his headlights.
He was in his front seat with his daughter in the back. Another driver noticed something suspicious and called 9-1-1.
The father and daughter are still alive, but the love Trista had for Thomas is dead. "I don't want to see his face again, ever. Not after what he just put my daughter through."
